10th Entry Bus Com Class

General Course of the Class:

Today aim was to learn making presentation with PSE style. Even though we discussed in the class before that we should put less text in our slides, once again we started off with discussing how using bullet points in slides makes the audience incapable of comprehending the content. Rab then showed us presentation slides which were designed poorly and filled with bullet points. He also conducted interactive activities to help us better understand its uselessness. Later on, after we moved on the document about the 7 Principles of a good presentation based on a Zen technique. Speaker emphasized the importance of using naturalness and simplicity throughout the presentation. He gave the some examples from designs with so much visual content and 3D graphs. Finally Rab stressed the principles of CRAP (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity). He stated that using the same style and an aligned form throughout the slides is very important. Repeating the same visual elements to create strong unity, using contrast to make one aspect stick out more and give relationships to convey meaning through proximity; are the key elements of CRAP. We learned so much today about technique of presentation.

My Reaction:

I was amazed by today's content in areas about using bullet points, speaker's tone and the simplicity in the content. First, Rab made an experiments with us which was so eye opening; he asked us to focus on the text while he was reading loudly. I believe we all failed to follow the text. I learned so much about how useless bullet points and finally understood why I cannot follow so many speaker during their presentations. Secondly, calmness of the speaker in the video we watched was also something that grabbed my attention. I understood that you don't have to speak too loud our be funny to make your presentation to be interesting. Speaker was being himself and very much in the moment which made him a very good presenter even though he was not acting very enthusiastic nor using a loud tone. Finally, I realized that I am still having hard time remembering everything I need to say and keeping only couple key words in the slide. I need notes on the side all the time when I it is a very informative content I need to provide to my audience. I know that using so many bullet points is useless, I still cannot understand how not to include numeric things, references etc. in a slide. Overall, today's class was amazing in terms of better understanding everything Rab was talking about in the past couple weeks.
