Nigeria and Measles

Nigeria is the most effected country from measles compared to the other countries. One of the major causes of child deaths is measles according to IDP (internally displaced persons) camps reports. The special condition of Nigeria is also linked with low routine immunization (RI) coverage, because Nigeria  has experienced these outbreaks repeatedly. Large measles outbreaks are affected Nigeria in 2019 and UNICEF and WHO declared that and 79 percent increase occurred in the 2022. Borno State is the most affected of all. As of August 20202, Global Measles Outbreaks page is updated and Nigeria has a record of 18,628 cases (WHO Data). Another problem is that US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that many countries already put off measles campaigns due to COVID-19 pandemic. This may result in bigger outbreaks not only in Nigeria but all around the world.

Current solutions are conventional vaccination teams, an outbreak response immunization (ORI) campaign is conducted.  Also there are special teams that are deployed for security compromised areas. National Primary Health Care Development Agency has carried out measles outbreak response immunization activities in the most affected areas.

UNICEF and WHO are one of the organizations that are fighting against the disease. UNICEF provides vaccination service for children from 9-59 months for childhood vaccines and adults. Other than vaccination services, logistical and technical support is also provided.
