3rd Entry- Bus Com Class
General Course of the Class:
Today's main focus was making an introduction to presentations. Firstly, we started off with having a 10 minutes conversation with our team just to talk about our personalities. Rab did not give us any clue on why we had such a conversation with our friends. Only thing he told us was where are supposed to make presentations and we need to decide on who will play which role during the presentation which are mouth, brain or the heart. In our group, 5th group, it only took us 2 minutes to decide who will be whom. Then we moved on to presentation topics. There were three main topics. First topic was dealing with economics/trade/development/marketing/PR. The second one was focused on pollution/environment/politics/economics/creativity. The third one that we agreed on as a class to deliver our presentation within couple weeks were about ICT/education technologies/digital literacy. Finally, Rab made a presentation on the digital literacy levels of Japan high schools. Providing data from highly reliable resources such as OECD-PISA, he explained the problematics regarding not developing an adaptation for a digital world in Japan, especially in education institutions. There were inevitable data showing the hardship students face in terms of technology use at their schools
My Reaction:
Assigning the roles in a group presentation, witnessing the presentation strategies used by Rab and learning how Japan struggles in terms of digitalization was three main aspects that had an influence on me today. Firstly, for group presentations, we had to assign each other for each role in the group. I felt like I feel obliged to be adequate to fill in every role whether it is a group assignment or family meeting. After realizing that I changed my attitude on limiting myself to one role, do not know if that was a sensible thing to do, before talking to my friends about my preference. I tried to face with what I am actually not really good at, which is wanting to act cute to make my/our presentation likable. (I better learn more about this all-in-one type of perfectionist character of mine to understand it motives first and lead it to more peaceful and effective situation) Secondly, I concluded that keeping the important data on your slides only can be more effective. It is always too confusing to have mixed images, texts, themes and fonts. During Rab's presentation, it definitely felt like an conversation when I had more chance as a a part of the audience to focus into the given data or one media content on the slide. Thirdly, the situation about digital literacy is a problematic on so many levels and it is makes everyone's work more exhausting. Knowing that Japan is actually super advanced in terms of technology, seeing how young people are so away from it is saddening. Still, I am trying to find a reason why Japan keeps the old ways alive. It can be related with keeping creativity of students on high levels by restricting them from smart technologies which is most of the time leaves the young people with little space to grow analytically which lays the foundation for one's solve problems on their own.
