4th Entry - Bus Com Class
I was sick in today's class and I couldn't attend. So I read around three entries on 4th week and requested one from one of my friends to catch me up on the class. Here is my blog entry based on the information I recieved:
General Course of the Class:
Today's main focus was first of all the checking out other university's websites, choosing "fonts" properly and preparing a brochure for TUFS University. Class started off with checking Hong Kong University's webpage we learned that there are useful sources for e-learning and and helpful links to student club's. Later, students are sent to breakout rooms and everyone searched for webpages of universities in different countries. I searched for MIT University's webpage since it is the leading technology center for higher education. Best feature I encountered with in the webpage was it was searching for one topic and easily moving to another related page with integrated links in the text of the page. Secondly, how problematic some of the fonts were is discussed. Roman fonts are so hard on eyes whereas sans serif fonts are much easier to follow without getting tired. (Thus, typography is very important especially in web and app design in my opinion) Finally, everyone used Canva.com to make brochures. In 15 minutes everyone prepared an brochure for TUFS university. There were so many templets to use easily. Without understanding of graphic design, especially without having any skills of Photoshop, Illustrator etc. skills, anyone can easily prepare modern designs for any kind of use. Comparing different universities' web pages, understanding the what makes a font convenient and using Canva.com was today's highlights.
My Reaction:
Before checking out other universities webpages Rab addressed the issues on how we can manage doing a group work while not being on the campus. It was a relief to learn that digital resources is just enough to make a good presentation. Also, one of our friends in our group is already on campus and she can help the group about it. Secondly, learning about the differences about fonts was not a new thing for me. Thankfully I took a class about Translation Technologies and our teacher at that time taught us how tired the eyes are with roman sans fonts. Still, it is crazy that in academia Time News Roman is widely recognized as the formal font while it causes great problems to read especially for the dyslexic people. Finally, using Canva.com was not new for me but hearing Rab's comments on the making it group work instead of individual work was really important since everyone tried to complete their work individually. He added notes on we should prepare the layout of our presentation according to our audience. I believe this note was rather an easy thing for us to naturally understand. To sum up, solving the problem of not being on campus, remembering why we should choose our font wisely, and creating professionally prepared visual content are what we have left of the day.
